Art (1)

Pronounced: /ärt/

  • The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power

Art is an “application of human creative skill and imagination” meaning art is what you imagine it to be. The art you made as a little kid and gave to your mom was a magnificent masterpiece of art to you. The doodles you create alongside your class notes when you know you should be paying more attention, but you just cannot seem to focus is art as well. Latte art is a form of delicious art. Art is the advertisement in the magazine you walk by every morning on your daily commute. Art surrounds your senses every day and inspires my generation to believe they can create something so that they can let their emotions out and feel.

Street Art

“Typically in a visual form” but is not limited to a visual form. Poetry is art. Music is art. Literature is art. Have you ever seen a musician in concert where the performance causes you to become utterly breathless because the emotion is overwhelmingly present? Think of all the times a song has resonated with you to the point where you think the artist somehow wrote it just for you. Or think of that story from your childhood that you always loved to hear. How many times have you found yourself reading a book late at night, several hours past when you should have been asleep but constantly making the excuse “just one more chapter” before your sleepy eyes force you to put the book down.

“[A]ppreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power” is the final section of the definition of ‘art’. Emotional power is like beauty; all is in the eye of the beholder. Any form of art may not be appreciated by all, but the point is what resonates with those who do appreciate it. I adore Twenty-One Pilots because I not only enjoy the beats, but I appreciate and understand the lyrics. Twenty-One pilots is the band that left me breathless and entirely overcome with emotion at their concert. Some people love rap, some country, some people love alternative punk rock. Some people love poetry, some prefer novels. Some people love hands on sculpting and painting while others love going out and photographing everything they desire to capture. The artist is who writes the books and poems we read, the masterminds behind the music we listen to, and the creators of the videos, sculptures, photographs, and paintings we are surrounded by.
