Keeping Stress Under Control During Finals

It is finally Thanksgiving break. You know what that means. Christmas break is coming soon. It also means that college students are preparing to be hurdled head first into finals week at full speed. That sounds terrifying and stressful, right? It doesn’t have to be. Here are some of my ways of attempted de-stressing as final exams quickly approach.

1. Know what you’re studying and prepare accordingly.

Sounds like common sense, right? Not always. A lot of students say that they have no idea what their final exams are even on or they don’t have a clue what is going on in class. Here are 2 simple ways to help with that.

  • Look at your syllabus. Your syllabus for the class will usually tell you if the exam is the last several topics you’re studying or if it is cumulative. Also, you should mark down the date and time of the exam in a planner/calendar so you know how much time you have to study before the time of the exam.
  • Attend Snowden ‘til 2. Chances are, your professors are going to be there for a period of time throughout the night and they are there to help you. Don’t understand your Philosophy class? Don’t have a single clue what is going on in your statistics or history class? See if your professor will be at Snowden ‘til 2 or, if not, office hours. They won’t judge you.

2. Study with friends and/or classmates

Every class seems to have that one kid who knows what’s going on. Try to get a study group going and ask that student if they would be okay with coming and helping you study and explain some things to you. Trust me, my statistics teacher didn’t make any sense at all. I learned more from YouTube videos and classmates during the days leading up to the exam than I did from the teacher all semester (sadly, some of us get this unfortunate situation).

3. Take a walk

When you have been studying for what feels like forever, take a break. Take a walk around campus or town. Grab friends and go grab a cup of coffee downtown at Alabaster (the Nutella latte is love in a cup), visit some local shops, or the old town hall if you like old buildings like me.

4. Change your view

Instead of working in your dorm, change up the view. When I do work on campus, I prefer to hide in the study rooms in the library, especially on the 3rd and 4th floor facing South Williamsport. I get a fantastic view and space to myself. Put on some comfy clothes, bring your laptop, notebooks, headphones, and a drink or two with a snack and you’re set for a while. Also, off campus, Alabaster is open usually until 7pm every day except Sunday so I definitely recommend going there to grab some coffee and study. The atmosphere there is usually rather calm and relaxing. Everyone has their own nook that they like to go to and work.

5. Take a nap/break

If you are feeling immensely stressed, your body needs a break. Take it from a girl with anxiety and constant worries; it helps to step away and do something that relaxes you. Watch an episode or two of your favorite show, get some sleep, or do something you like to do for fun like drawing, photography, or for the gym junkies, go to the Lyco gym and release some stress. If you need to, just breathe. Whatever helps you relax, don’t just sit there and think of all the work you could be doing.

I don’t believe I need any further explanation. Unless you really feel like you know exactly what you’re doing for a final exam, don’t procrastinate studying at least a little bit. Take 10 minutes a day to review what you learned in class during the week. It’ll help you in the long run.
